UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State Women’s Tennis (11-1, 3-0 B1G) earned their second Big Ten sweep in as many tries against Purdue (7-3, 1-2 B1G) on Sunday at the Indoor Tennis Center.
The Nittany Lions earned the doubles point with two victories. On court one, Olivia Dorner and Maiko Uchijima earned a 6-3 ranked win over Carmen Guevera Gallardo and Tara Katarina Milic. At the three spot, Yvonne Zuffova and Jelena Vico gutted out a 7-5 triumph against Ida Clement and Ashlie Wilson. At second doubles, Jordina Cegarra and Patricia Grigoras left their match unfinished against Fatima Gutierrez and Kathryn Wilson.
Vico, a freshman, grabbed a 6-3, 6-4 win on court four over Juana Larranaga to push Penn State’s advantage to 2-0. Dorner earned a comeback win on court one. She took down Guevera Gallardo 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 in a three-set thriller. Uchijima sealed the win for the Blue & White in another thrilling contest. She defeated Clement 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 at the two spot.
Grigoras, on court three, had her match go unfinished in the third set against Gutierrez. Zuffova’s match was stopped in the first set when she held a 4-1 advantage over Ece Gencer. Maria Daciana Ciubotaru and Milic did not start on court six.
The Nittany Lions hit the road for weekends matchups against Michigan State on Saturday, March 15 at 12 p.m. and Michigan the next day at the same time.
