Nittany Lions Scrap for 3-1 Midweek Win at Oregon State

Strong pitching, opportunistic hitting power PSU to first win in program history over Beavers

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Penn State softball team utilized strong pitching and opportunistic offense to open its spring break road trip with a win, defeating the Oregon State Beavers for the first time in program history behind a 3-1 performance from Kelly Field.

Penn State’s 2026 roster made a small piece of program history in the result against Oregon State, securing the first win over the Beavers following the sixth all-time meeting. The Nittany Lions earned the program’s first victory over OSU in the first-ever contest played on either team’s campus, with the Blue & White securing their fourth true road win of the campaign. With the win in hand, Penn State improves to 19-6 overall, while Oregon State drops to 10-18 and enters West Coast Conference competition this weekend against Weber State while PSU continues its week in the Pacific Northwest against No. 18 Oregon.

The Nittany Lion offense combined for six hits across the midweek clash in Corvallis, with six different student-athletes recording base knocks. Freshman left fielder Breanna Hanik was strong in her showing against the Beavers, finishing 1-for-2 with the only extra-base hit of the evening in the form of a double to center field that led off the top of the fifth inning. The Oak Lawn, Illinois, native, Hanik added a run scored with an RBI and a sacrifice fly to her final score line. PSU saw additional singles come from freshman third baseman Allison Oneacre, sophomore center fielder Natalie Lieto, junior designated player Brooke Klosowicz, sophomore catcher Macy Chamberlin and freshman first baseman Gabby Gradishar. In addition to Hanik’s run scored, Lieto and junior Frankee Flesher both added tallies of their own to cap of Penn State’s scoring production on Wednesday.

In the pitcher’s circle, sophomore right-hander Abigail Britton earned the starting nod and went 2.0 innings with three hits and an earned run allowed in addition to two walks and a strikeout across her 11 batters faced. Britton earned the start for the fourth time this season in her 13th appearance for the Blue & White. Freshman right-handed pitcher Mackenzie Duncan appeared for 2.0 innings in relief during her 11th collegiate appearance, yielding a lone hit with zero walks and three strikeouts in her pair of shutout frames. Finally, freshman southpaw Brevyn Kellepouris entered the circle and went the rest of the way, earning the winning decision and improving to 4-1 individually following 3.0 scoreless, walk-free frames.

The Nittany Lions opened the game with a leadoff single from Oneacre, and Chamberlin tallied a double off the wall later in the inning, but the board remained clean through half of a frame. Outside of a two-out double in the home half of the first, the two squads remained knotted at zero through one. Free passes plagued the Nittany Lions in the bottom of the second, with the Beavers able to scratch the opening run across the board to take a 1-0 lead through two. Little occurred until the top of the fifth inning, when Hanik led things off with a double to center field. With one down, Bohner reached via a fielder’s choice, and Hanik advanced to third after the Beaver pitcher failed to throw the lead runner out at third base. Barbanente put an RBI grounder in play from there to plate Hanik and tie the game at one apiece.

Penn State’s pitchers kept the board clean in the home half of the fifth, and the Nittany Lions seized their opportunity to take hold of the momentum in the top of the sixth frame. Lieto and Klosowicz opened the inning off with back-to-back singles, with the runners ultimately finding themselves on second and third on the throw. The Beavers made a pitching change, and a runner’s interference call against Klosowicz on a ball in play from Chamberlin saw Klosowicz called out while Chamberlin reached first via fielder’s choice. Following the interference call, Flesher entered to pinch run for Chamberlin at first, electing to steal second base moments later. A single to left from Gradishar brought the go-ahead run aboard while leaving runners on the corners, and an erroneously fielded sacrifice fly from Hanik brought Flesher in for an insurance tally. Leading by a 3-1 margin, the Blue & White buckled down and closed a solid showing in the team’s first-ever game in the Pacific Northwest state of Oregon.
