Lyndsey Smith won the first individual event of her career with a first place finish in the 200 breaststroke, missing an NCAA 'B' cut by less than a second.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; January 19, 2007 - Competing for the first time since December 2, the Penn State women??s swimming and diving team won eight out of 13 events and tied for first with Ohio State in one other event to improve to 6-0 on the season in dual meets with a 141.5-98.5 win over visiting Ohio State on Friday afternoon at McCoy Natatorium in what was the SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Dual Meet of the Week. The women??s team will be joined by the men??s team tomorrow at noon as the Nittany Lions will take on Rutgers in the final home meet of the year.

The meet got off to an exciting start as the Nittany Lions?? and Buckeyes?? top 200 medley relay teams tied for first place in a time of 1:46.62. The Nittany Lion team of Kelly Nelson, Abby Hoisington, Karie Haglund and Michelle Myers swam the second-fastest time of the year for Penn State in that event. Penn State also picked up points with a third place finish by the team of Daphne Skelos, Lyndsey Smith, Lindsey DeForrest and Genie Cheng.

In the 1000 free, Nikki Collins won her third 1000 race of the year in a time of 10:08.48 and just behind her was Sarah Baker in second at 10:11.32. The first place finish was also Collins?? fifth overall on the season.

Kaitlin O??Brien earned her seventh first place finish of the year by winning the 200 free in a time of 1:50.33, just .03 of a second off an NCAA ??B?? cut. Claire Hawley finished third and Erin Morris placed fourth.


Kimberlee Peifer scored her best point total of the year in taking her third first place finish of the year in the one-meter springboard.

The Nittany Lions had three swimmers pick up points in the 50 free as well as DeForrest and Cheng tied for second in :24.43 and Rachel Ahrenhold came in fifth in :24.94. Ahrenhold and DeForrest each swam their fastest times of the year in the 50 free.

Megan Palera won her first race of the year as she took first in the 200 IM in 2:05.64. She was followed in second by Hoisington in 2:07.54 while Clare Clemens also picked up points with a fourth place finish in her fastest time of the year in the 200 IM, 2:09.49.

Kailey Morris picked up her second first place finish in the 200 butterfly this year with an NCAA ??B?? time of 2:00.78, although she has already swam a faster ??B?? time this year. Karie Haglund, who already owns an ??A?? automatic NCAA cut in the 200 fly, placed second in 2:01.05 and has made either an ??A?? time or a ??B?? time in every one of her swims in the 200 fly this year.

Penn State finished 2-3-4 in the 200 backstroke with Jessica Barnes, O??Brien and Kaitlyn Ferguson coming in second, third and fourth. The Nittany Lions then once again dominated a distance event as they finished 1-2-3. Nelson, swimming the 500 for just the second time this year after winning her first 500 last month in a career-best time, swam the third-best time of her career in taking first again in 4:56.06. Palera took second in season-best 5:00.15 while Jaime Keily finished third in 5:01.90, over seven second faster than the fourth place finisher.



Megan Palera won her first race of the year with a first place finish in the 200 IM. She also placed second in the 500 free.

Lyndsey Smith won the 200 breaststroke in her best time of the year, 2:18.09, just .44 of a second short of an NCAA ??B?? cut. Clemens took third in that event.The meet wrapped up with Penn State taking first in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Cheng, Myers, Nelson and Molly Crispell swam a time of 1:35.18, the best time of the year for Penn State in that event.

In the diving events, Kimberlee Peifer compiled her highest score of the year on the one-meter board with a 280.25 to win that event, her third first place finish of the year in the one-meter. Courtney Adlam also scored her highest point total of the year in the one-meter with a 276.38 to take fourth and Jocelyn Avery took fifth. In the three-meter, Adlam placed third with a 294.00 while Peifer took fourth and Avery took fifth with a career best score of 206.77.

Tomorrow??s dual meet with Rutgers will also be Senior Day as 10 seniors will compete for Penn State at McCoy Natatorium for the final time.
