DENVER, Colo.; - The Penn State women's tennis team fell to the Pioneers of Denver on their first road match of the spring season, 6-1.
Juniors Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) led the way for Penn State in doubles taking down Bhavani Tirumurti and Kaja Smole, 8-3. Seniors Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) and Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.) put up a strong fight against Mallory Voelker and Annette Aksdal but fell 8-6, and sophomores Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) and Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) dropped an 8-5 decision to Ute Schnoy and Julia Bauregger to clinch the doubles point for Denver.
Dohanics came out on top for Penn State in singles with a win over Smole (6-1, 6-2). Denver was in charge from there on out with Voelker beating Shular (6-3, 6-2) and BeVard falling to Schnoy (6-0, 6-1). Holzberg dropped a pair of sets to Aksdal (6-3, 6-4), Lotto fell to Bauregger (6-2, 6-1) and McCarthy was topped by Tirumurti (6-4, 6-3).
"Dorothy (Dohanics) competed very well today," said head coach Dawna Prevette.
The Nittany Lions will be away again next weekend in Winston-Salem, N.C. where they will take on Wake Forest. Play begins at 12 p.m. The team will return home the weekend of Feb. 8 to take on Marshall.
