University Park, Pa.; - The Penn State women's tennis team (6-6, 1-1) was back in action tonight at home facing the Temple Owls. The Nittany Lions came out on top defeating the Owls, 6-1. Penn State swept the doubles matches and won five of six doubles matches.
In doubles action, Penn State came out ready to go and won all three matches. Sophomore Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) paired with senior Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.) defeated Lucie Pazderova and Theresa Stangl, 8-5. Senior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) partnered with sophomore Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) to take down Christine Clermont and Anastasiia Rukavyshnykova, 8-5. Junior Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and freshman Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) defeated Dina Senkina and Josephine Bergman, 8-6.
Penn State earned five singles wins tonight. Junior Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) defeated Pazderova (6-2, 6-4), while Shular took down Clermont in straight sets (6-3, 6-2). Dohanics defeated Rukavyshnykova (6-3, 7-6 (7-1), McCarthy earned a win over Bergman (6-3, 7-6 (7-4) and Zobeideh had a thrilling three-set victory over Stangl (6-2, 2-6, 12-10).
"I'm proud of how our team played tonight," said head coach Dawna Prevette. "I feel like we are becoming more disciplined with our shot selection."
The Nittany Lions will be back in action this Sunday facing the St. John's Red Storm. Action begins at 3:30 p.m. or after the conclusion of the Penn State men's tennis match. Admission at the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center is free.
