Junior Outside Hitter Matt Anderson and Senior Sprinter Shana Cox Named Student-Athletes of the Week

May 7, 2008

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Volleyball's Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) and the women's track and field's Shana Cox (Westbury, N.Y.) have been named this week's Penn State Student-Athletes of the Week.

Anderson had a big week as he led the Penn State men's volleyball team to its second ever national title. He was named the Most Outstanding Player at the NCAA Championship, only the second ever Nittany Lion to receive this prestigious award. He averaged 7.38 kills per game while hitting at a .460 clip.

Against the Buckeyes, Anderson racked up 30 kills on .469 hitting with two digs and two blocks, and in the title match against the Waves, Anderson produced 29 kills on .451 hitting with three digs and three blocks.

Senior Shana Cox

Cox also had a big weekend as she managed victories in the 200-meters, 400-meters, and 4x100-meter relay. Cox smoothly sailed to victory in the quarter mile, turning in a season-best 52.45. The senior was just as impressive in the 200, bettering the competition by nearly half a second and running 23.37. The team of Shavon GReaves (Lakewood, N.J.), Cox, Aleesha Barber (Decatur, Ga.), and Dominique Blake (Bronx, N.Y.) combined to win the 400-meter relay, running a season-best 45.78, missing the NCAA regional mark by less than a tenth of a second.

This is the third Student-Athlete of the Week award for Anderson, and the fourth for Cox.
