WEST POINT, N.Y. - The seventh-ranked Penn State men's gymnastics team concluded competition at the 2011 West Point Open on Saturday night with three Nittany Lions capturing titles in the individual event finals session of the two-day meet. On Friday, PSU secured its 13th consecutive West Point Open team crown.
Senior Matt Albrecht (Guelph, Ont.) and sophomores Scott Rosenthal (Clearfield, Pa.) and Mackenzie Dow (Cranford, N.J.) followed up event strong showings in the team finals with individual wins. Albrecht (high bar) and Dow (parallel bars) each repeated as champions on day two. Rosenthal claimed his second still rings title of the season, posting a score of 14.400, after placing second in the event in the team finals.
Dow (high bar), sophomore Parker Raque (Louisville, Ky.) (floor exercise), and redshirt freshman Francisco Vazquez (San Juan, P.R.) (vault) secured second place finishes while redshirt junior Colin Hill (Sterling, Mass.) (floor exercise), freshman Preston Gall (Columbus, Ohio) (pommel horse), and redshirt freshman Nihir Kothari (Malvern, Pa.) (still rings) contributed third place performances.
The Nittany Lions open Big Ten competition next weekend, hosting defending national champion and preseason No. 2-ranked Michigan on Sat., Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. at Rec Hall. A year ago, Penn State fell to the Wolverines, 355.650-344.750, in Ann Arbor. The meet will also feature the Nittany Lion women's gymnastics team meeting New Hampshire.
