David Willette Takes First at Olympic Trials

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; January 17,2011 - Members of the Penn State men's and women's fencing teams joined the ranks of some of the world's top fencers this weekend Jan. 14-17, in Dallas, Texas. The Nittany Lions placed high amongst the nearly 3,000 fencers competing in the Olympic Trials.

Sophomore David Willette had a phenomenal performance defeating Alexander Massialas for the men's foil title. All-American Miles Chamley Watson finished fifth with teammate Daniel Gomez rounding out the top eight. Freshman Jeremy Goldstein finished in the top sixteen.

In the men's saber Adrian Bak pitted his way to third and junior captain Aleksander Ochocki placed within the top sixteen.

Monica Aksamit finished in the top 16 in the women's saber with Nicole Glon placing in the top 32.

National Champion Margherita Guzzi competed in the women's epee taking a spot in the top 32.

Next weekend Sun Jan 23, the Nittany Lions will travel to St. John's to compete against Columbia, Harvard, UND and OSU. The competition will begin at 10am.
