BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Penn State men's tennis team will have five members of the team in the singles Main Draw Round of 32 after advancing on Saturday. Matt Barry, Russell Bader, Alex Fennell, Michael Reilly and Roman Trkulja all won on Saturday to advance. Bader and Fennell also advanced in the doubles draw.
The action continues on Sunday with a round of singles and two rounds of doubles.
Freshman Alex Fennell (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.), a Top 32 seed in the regional, backed up his seed by winning his first match of the tournament, 6-3, 6-1, against VCU's Wilder Pimentel. On Sunday, Fennell matches up against Virginia Tech's Hunter Koontz.
After a first-round bye, senior Russell Bader (Austin, Texas) earned a straight set win against Old Dominion's Dante Terenzio, 7-5, 6-0. Bader takes on Libery's Shea Thomas in the Round of 32. Bader is the No. 12 seed in the draw.
Sophomore Roman Trkulja (Toronto, Canada) also made his tournament debut after a first-round bye. Trkulja knocked off Radford's Joe Mills, 6-2, 6-3. Trkulja, a Top 32 seed, faces George Washington's Nikita Fomin on Sunday.
Matt Barry (Lido Beach, N.Y.) advanced to the Round of 32 with a hard-fought victory over Navy's Thomas Pecor. After Barry fell 7-6(7) in the first set, he came back with a tough second set win, 7-6(6). Barry came out on top in the third set, 6-4. He moves onto a Sunday matchup against George Washington's Danil Zelenkov.
Michael Reilly (Raleigh, N.C.) won his second-straight match of the regional. He took on UMBC's Justin Carter, a Top 32 seed, and came away with a straight set victory, 6-3, 6-0. He faces Virginia Tech's Amerigo Contini on Sunday. Contini is the No. 2 seed in the draw.
Freshman Marc Collado Castells (Barcelona, Spain) also competed in the singles Main Draw on Saturday, but fell 6-2, 6-3 to Richmond's Ethan Dunbar.
David Kohan (Sydney, Australia) matched up against Norfolk State's Robin Riethmueller in the Round of 32. Riethmueller came out on top with a 6-4, 6-4 win.
Nika Dolidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) won his consolation first round match, 6-4, 7-5, against Liberty's Dillon Segur.
Christian Lutschaunig (Richboro, Pa.) also competed in a consolation match, but fell 6-4, 6-2 against Old Dominion's Jonas Kuwert.
In another consolation match, Chris Young (Melbourne, Australia) dropped a 6-4, 7-5 match against Temple's Hernan Vasconez.
Bader and Fennell made their Main Draw Doubles debut. The duo knocked off Georgetown's Shane Korber and Yannick Mahlangu, 8-5 to advance to the Round of 16. In that round, they met the No. 8 seed in the bracket, Virgnia's Ryan Shane and Jordan Daigle. They earned a spot in the quarterfinals with an 8-6 victory. On Sunday, they match up against George Washington's Francisco Dias and Viktor Svensson.
Reilly and Trkulja earned an 8-4 win in the Round of 32 over Georgetown's Alex Tropiano and Casey Distaso. In the Round of 16, they fell 8-6 against the No. 2 seed in the doubles draw, Virginia Tech's Andres Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini.
Barry and Lutschaunig (Richboro, Pa.) matched up against Richmond's Ethan and Jacob Dunbar, but dropped an 8-4 decision.
Castells and Dolidze took on the No. 7 seed, Virginia Tech's Hunter Koontz and Joao Monteiro, but fell 8-2.
