WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Penn State men's tennis team won 13 of 14 matches on Friday at the William & Mary Invitational. The Nittany Lions won singles matches at the top four flights and went undefeated in doubles. The Nittany Lions took on William & Mary today in doubles flights 1-3 and singles flights 1-8. Each doubles pair played two matches, with two pairs playing matches against Old Dominion pairs.
Penn State will take on Harvard tomorrow. The Crimson finished last spring ranked 28th in the nation.
"Playing Harvard will be a good gauge of where we are now." said Head Coach Jeff Zinn. "I have a feeling that the intensity will go up tomorrow against a good opponent in Harvard. This will be a good test for us leading into the spring."
Senior Russell Bader (Austin, Texas) earned a straight set win in his No. 1 singles match. Bader knocked off Ben Hoogland, 6-1, 6-4. Bader picked up his fifth win of the fall.
At No. 2 singles, Roman Trkulja (Toronto, Canada) took on Damon Niquet. After dropping the first set 6-4, Trkulja bounced back with a 6-3 win in the second set. Trkulja came out on top in the third set, 6-0.
Matt Barry (Lido Beach, N.Y.) competed at No. 3 singles against John Banks. Barry earned the sweep, 6-2, 6-2. He is now 7-3 on the year.
Junior Michael Reilly (Raleigh, N.C.) matched up against Will Juggins at No. 4 singles. Reilly won a tough first set, 6-5(5), and came back with a 6-4 victory in the second set. Reilly picked up his sixth win of the fall.
Marc Collado Castells (Barcelona, Spain) overcame a 4-6 loss in the first set against Scott Huang at No. 6 singles. The freshman earned a 6-2 win in the second set and clinched the match with a 6-3 victory in the final set. Collado Castells now has seven wins.
Sophomore David Kohan (Sydney, Australia) earned a sweep, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 7 against Zach Braig. Kohan claimed his seventh win of the fall.
Freshman Christian Lutschaunig (Richboro, Pa.) competed at No. 8 singles against Austin Davidow. The Pennsylvania native picked a 6-2, 6-3 win. He is now 4-3 this fall.
Nika Dolidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) matched up against Addison Appleby at No. 5 singles, but fell 7-5, 1-6, 6-4.
Reilly and Trkulja paired up at No. 1 doubles. In their first match, they knocked off Aaron Chaffee and Scott Huang, 8-4. In the second match, they defeated Ben Guthrie and Appleby, 8-6.
Another doubles tandem, Bader and Barry, matched up against Old Dominion's Jonas Kuwert and Darragh Glavin. The Penn State duo earned the victory, 8-2. In their second contest, they took on William & Mary's John Banks and Ben Hoogland, claiming the 8-4 win.
Kohan and Lutschaunig combined at No. 3 doubles. The pair knocked off Old Dominion's Dante Terenzio and Zvonimir Podvinski, 8-4. Kohan and Lutschaunig then won a tough battle, 8-7(4), against William & Mary's Juggins and Niquet.
