Women’s Tennis Sweeps Through Doubleheader

The Nittany Lions dominated St. Bonaventure, 7-0, and Niagara, 4-0, without dropping a set in both matches

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State Women’s Tennis (5-1) earned dominant wins against St. Bonaventure (1-6) and Niagara (1-6) on Saturday. The team took down St. Bonaventure, 7-0, and Niagara, 4-0. For the fourth time in five victories, the Nittany Lions did not drop a set as they cruised to victory. 

St. Bonaventure  

Penn State took the doubles point with ease. The junior pair of Olivia Dorner and Maiko Uchijima, ranked No. 77 by ITA, blanked Isabella Venter and Cirkeline Lundberg, 6-0, on court one. Senior Yvonne Zuffova and freshman Maria Daciana Ciubotaru defeated Kashish Bote and Kelly Barnes, 6-3, on court three to secure the point.  

Dorner got the ball rolling in singles with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 court one victory over Lundberg. At spot three, freshman Patricia Grigoras took her match against Tamara Bachmann, 6-3, 6-1. Uchijima clinched the win for the Blue and White with a 6-3, 6-2 win on court two against Venter. 

Freshman Jelena Vico gutted out a 6-1, 7-5 victory at the four spot over Sienna Smith. On court five, Zuffova swept her match against Kashish Bote, 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Jordina Cegarra closed out the contest with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the six spot.  

Niagara 

Cegarra and Grigoras earned a 6-2 doubles victory over Mercedes Velasco and Saloni Tamang on court two to open the action. Paired with Zuffova, Vico made her spring doubles debut. The pair won 7-5 against Valeria Mora and Larisa Kotok to clinch the doubles point. 

The Nittany Lions owned singles play from start to finish. Grigoras took down Larisa Kotok, 6-1, 6-1, on court three to earn the team’s first win in singles. Vico earned a victory shortly after on court four. She triumphed, 6-1, 6-0, against Saloni Tamang. Uchijima closed out the match with an impressive 6-2, 6-1 win on court two over Gabriela Melo. 

The singles matches for Dorner on court one, Zuffova on court five and Cegarra on court six all went unfinished.  

Penn State wraps up the weekend against Mount St. Mary’s at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Indoor Tennis Center.
