UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - The Penn State women's tennis team fought a tough battle today against the Big Red of Cornell, winning six of eight singles matches and one doubles match.
The day started off with doubles play. Junior Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) teamed up with sophomore Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) to earn the sole doubles win of the day over Catherine Duboc and Ruxandra Dumitrescu (8-4). In other doubles action, sophomore Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) and senior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) were defeated by Liz Googe and Susan Sullivan, 8-5. Senior Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.) and junior Lauren Holzberg fell 8-4 to Shayna Miller and Sinziana Chis.
In singles action, Penn State won its first and last three matches, dropping two in the middle. Shular came out on top of Googe with a 6-4, 6-3 win early in the day. Lotto also came out on top with a convincing win over Sullivan (6-0, 6-4). Up next for the Nittany Lions was Holzberg who brought in the third win defeating Kei Kinoshita (6-3, 6-2). Freshman Denisa Zobeideh fell after a thrilling three-set match against Melissa Orteza (2-6, 6-4, 7-5). Dohanics, competing in the fifth singles slot, dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Chis. The final three Nittany Lions competitors brought home wins for Penn State. Junior Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, British Columbia) had an exciting three-set victory over Ruxandra Dumitrescu (3-6, 6-3, 6-4). McCarthy defeated Miller 6-3, 6-2, and wrapping it up for the Nittany Lions was sophomore Julie Raezer, who took a convincing win over Duboc (6-3, 6-2).
The Penn State Invitational marks the end of the fall season for the Nittany Lions. After having the rest of the semester off, the team will travel to Colorado Sunday, Jan. 27 to face the Denver Pioneers to start its spring season.
