University Park, Pa.; - After ruining the Temple women's tennis team's opportunity to earn its 12th-straight game Friday night, the Penn State women's tennis team (7-6, 1-1) came back today and earned its second-straight win defeating St. John's 7-0.
The Nittany Lions won two of three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Earning a win for Penn State was sophomore Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) and senior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) who paired up to defeat Alison Adamski and Emily Barnett, 8-4. Junior Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and freshman Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) earned win number two defeating Ashley Harper and Jenny Yonkus, 8-4. Losing in doubles was senior Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.) and sophomore Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) who fell to Ira Aleksova and Maria Zvivcicova, 8-4.
Penn State won all six singles matches. Bevard defeated Zivcicova (6-4, 4-6 (10-2)) and junior Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) played Alison Adamski to 1-0 before Adamski defaulted. Shular took down Barnett in a three-set match (4-6, 6-1, 6-1, while Dohanics earned a win over Aleksova in straight sets (6-2, 6-2). Zobeideh defeated Harper (6-4, 6-0) and McCarthy closed out the night with a win over Yonkus (6-0, 6-2).
"We played solid tennis today," said head coach Dawna Prevette. "This is a great confidence going into the rest of the Big Ten season."
The Nittany Lions are back on the road this weekend to take on Big Ten foes Minnesota and Iowa. Both matches begin at 11 a.m.
