Iowa City, Iowa; - The Penn State women's tennis team (7-8, 1-3) ran into a tough Iowa squad today, falling 5-2 to the No. 45 Hawkeyes. Despite losing the doubles point, the Nittany Lions kept it close in singles until Iowa's Lynne Poggense-Wei secured the victory for the Hawkeyes.
In doubles action, Jacqueline Lee and Alexis Dorr defeated sophomore Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) and senior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) 8-4. Iowa's Mili Veselinovic and Kelcie Klockenga paired up to defeat sophomore Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) and senior Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.) 8-3. Junior Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and freshman Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) fell to Hawkeye partners Kayla Berry and Lynne Poggensee-Wei, 8-1.
The Nittany Lions started off singles with a win from Shular, who posted a convincing defeat over Dorr (6-1, 6-3). McCarthy followed shortly after with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Berry. Iowa's Veselinovic tied up the match for the two teams with a 6-1, 6-3 win over junior Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.). From then on, the Hawkeyes held the Nittany Lions for the rest of the afternoon. Lee defeated BeVard (7-5, 6-0), Poggensee-Wei took down Dohanics (6-4, 6-2), and junior Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, British Columbia) fell in a three-set thriller to Klockenga (7-5, 4-6, 10-8).
The Nittany Lions will be back at home Saturday, April 5. Penn State will host Purdue on Saturday and Illinois on Sunday. Action is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. both days.
