ANN ARBOR, Mich.; - The Penn State women's tennis team (7-11, 1-6 Big Ten) dropped a 7-0 decision to nationally-ranked Michigan today, allowing Michigan (14-4, 7-1 Big Ten) to bring home its 12th-straight win.
The Nittany Lions fell behind early as the Wolverines walked away with the doubles point. Michigan's Whitney Taney and Rika Tatsuno defeated senior Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.) and junior Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, B.C.) 8-1, followed by Lindsey Howard and Denise Muresan who defeated junior Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and sophomore Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) 8-2. The No. 56 pair of Tania Mahtani and Chisako Sugiyama took down sophomore Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) and senior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.), 8-5, to round out the doubles competition.
Michigan continued its dominance in singles competition. No. 46 Sugiyama defeated BeVard (6-2, 6-0), Taney took down junior Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) (6-0, 6-1), Muresan beat Shular (0-6, 6-3, 1-0 (7)) and No. 105Mahtani topped McCarthy (6-2, 6-2). Morzan fell to Tatsuno in straight set (6-2, 6-2) and freshman Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) dropped a three set match to Howard (6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (7)).
Tomorrow, the Nittany Lions face No. 59 Michigan State. Action is set to begin at 11 a.m. in East Lansing.
