Nittany Lion Swimmers Perform Well at Charlotte Ultraswim Meet

June 11, 2008

University Park, Pa. - Several members of the Penn State men's and women's swimming teams competed at the Charlotte Ultraswim meet last weekend. The elite meet that featured several of the top swimmers in the country was part of the Toyota Grand Prix series of swimming meets and the final one of the 2007-08 competition year. Kaitlin O'Brien picked up two gold medals at the event while Pat Schirk picked up one. Additionally, Chris Sullivan became the ninth Penn State male swimmer to qualify for next month's U.S. Olympic Trials.

O'Brien took first place in both the 200 breaststroke and 400 IM, her two strongest events. In the 200 breast, after finishing second in the prelims, she beat the second place finisher by over a second in the finals, touching the wall in 2:33.51. Three Nittany Lions finished in the top eight in the 200 breast as Clare Clemens finished fourth and Abby Hoisington placed eighth.

In the 400 IM, O'Brien won going away, first swimming the fastest time in the prelims by over five and a half seconds and then coming back to win in the finals by nearly four and half seconds over the second place finisher. Daphne Skelos also finished fourth in the 400 IM finals.

Schirk took first place in the 50 backstroke, winning in :26.71 after finishing second in the prelims.

Sullivan qualified for U.S. Olympic Trials with his swim in the 1500 freestyle. He finished ninth in 15:52.32, just under the qualifying standard of 15:53.59. Additionally, five women who have already qualified for Trials picked up new Trial cuts in different events. Karie Haglund, who already owns Trial cuts in four different events, added a fifth event with a cut in the 400 free. Abby Hoisington, who already had a cut in the 100 breast, added the 200 breast to her list of cuts. Michelle Myers picked up a new cut in the 50 free after already having cuts in the 100 and 200 back while Skelos picked up a new cut in the 200 IM and Clare Clemens picked up a new cut in the 200 IM as well.

Chris Sullivan became the ninth Penn State men's swimmer to qualify for Olympic Trials with a qualifying time in the 1500 freestyle.

Penn State now has a total of 11 women and nine men that have qualified for and will swim at U.S. Olympic Trials, which will be held June 29-July 5 in Omaha, Neb. Additionally, men's swimmer Basil Kaaki has already qualified for the Olympics, where he will be swimming for his native country of Lebanon.
