BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Penn State men's tennis team finished up play at the ITA Atlantic Regional on Monday. Russell Bader and Alex Fennell competed in the doubles semifinal against a team from Liberty, but did not advance. Penn State totaled 12 singles wins and six doubles wins on the weekend.
Bader (Austin, Texas) and Fennell (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) matched up against Liberty's Shea Thomas and Jorge Azuero in the regional doubles semifinal. After three straight wins at the regional, the Penn State duo could not capture a fourth straight victory, falling 8-3 against Liberty.
Three other Penn State doubles pairs each went 1-1 this past weekend. Michael Reilly (Raleigh, N.C.) and Roman Trkulja (Toronto, Canada) reached the Round of 16.
Sophomore Matt Barry (Lido Beach, N.Y.) and freshman Christian Lutschaunig (Richboro, Pa.) went 1-1 to get to the second round. Freshmen Marc Collado Castells (Barcelona, Spain) and Nika Dolidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) also reached the second round.
David Kohan (Sydney, Australia) and Chris Young (Melbourne, Australia) also competed in the doubles draw, but dropped their first round match.
Five Nittany Lions reached the third round in the Main Singles Draw at the regional. Barry, Bader, Fennell, Reilly and Trkulja all advanced to the third round.
Castells went 1-1 this weekend to earn a spot in the second round.
Sophomore Kohan and junior Ramy Labna (Doha, Qatar) both fought their way through the qualifying draw to claim spots in the main draw. Kohan rode his momentum from the qualifying draw to win his first round match in the main draw. Kohan went 3-1 on the weekend.
Dolidze dropped his main draw first round match, but bounced back with a consolation match win.
The Nittany Lions travel next weekend to the Big Ten Singles Championship, hosted by Purdue.
