Softball Falls in Regular Season Finale to No. 3 Nebraska

Nittany Lions begin postseason with Big Ten Tournament first round matchup on Wednesday, May 6

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State softball celebrated its graduating 2026 senior class on Sunday afternoon, honoring the careers of Cara Bohner, Jordyn Jochims and Madison Seidel in a pregame Senior Day ceremony presented by the Penn State Alumni Association. PSU dropped a 13-5 decision to the No. 3 Nebraska Cornhuskers in the teams’ regular season finale from Nittany Lion Softball Park & Beard Field.

Offensively, Penn State was led by a pair of student-athletes who registered multiple-hit outings. Freshman left fielder Breanna Hanik booked a 2-for-4 day at the plate that included a run scored, RBI and solo home run over the fence in left center to extend the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior second baseman Michela Barbanente finished 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Elsewhere in the order, junior designated player Brooke Klosowicz went 1-for-2 with a run scored, three RBI, a home run and pair of walks drawn, while freshman third baseman Allison Oneacre turned in a 1-for-4 day with a run and double to her credit.

In the circle, Penn State called on all five of its pitchers to work through Sunday’s series finale. Freshman southpaw Brevyn Kellepouris notched the start and booked an inning of work, ultimately being saddled with the loss at 4-3 overall on the year. Sophomore righty Abigail Britton worked an inning in relief, while junior right-handers McKenna Young and Bridget Nemeth each tallied a pair of frames across Sunday’s finale. Freshman right-hander Mackenzie Duncan rounded out the Nittany Lion pitching quintet, tossing the final inning of work against the Cornhuskers on the weekend.

Nebraska got out to an early three-run advantage in the top of the first inning and ballooned their lead to eight runs through the first two and a half frames. Penn State’s bats answered back with a three-run top of the third, as Walters led things off and punched an infield single down the third base line. Oneacre followed that up with a double off the wall in left field that had serious pop off the bat, and Klosowicz rewarded both of her teammates with a three-run shot over the fence in dead center that brought Penn State back within five runs of the lead. Nebraska and PSU traded blows with one run apiece in the fourth inning, but Nebraska was ultimately able to pull away and take the series finale by a 13-5 score in seven innings of work.

Following Sunday’s result in Happy Valley, Penn State wrapped up its 52-game regular season calendar and closed the book on a 32-20 campaign coupled with an 11-13 finish in Big Ten Conference competitions. Nebraska closed its 2026 regular season campaign at 43-6 overall and 23-1 in Big Ten matchups. The squads will both head to College Park, Maryland, this Wednesday through Saturday, May 6 through 9, as the programs get set to join a 12-team field at the 2026 Big Ten Softball Tournament presented by Allstate from Maryland Softball Stadium.
