COACHING ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- A former professional on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour, Alexandra McIntyre (formerly Anghelescu (On-guhl-S-coo)) enters her sixth season in 2024-25 leading the Penn State women’s tennis program.
- She was named the program’s 11th head coach on July 1, 2019 after spending the 2018-19 season as an assistant coach with the Nittany Lions.
- In 2024, the Nittany Lions tallied six wins, including four in Big Ten play.
- Penn State earned ranked wins over #71 Michigan State (4-1), #73 Rutgers (4-3) and #49 Maryland (5-2).
- Sofiya Chekhlystova earned All-Big Ten honors for the third time in her career and was named College Sports Communicators Academic All-District for the second time.
- Chekhlystova collected 16 singles wins and 10 doubles victories, while finishing the season ranked No. 4 in the ITA Northeast Regional.
- Olivia Dorner and Karly Friedland ranked as high as No. 69 in the ITA Doubles Poll, while finishing the year as the No. 9 doubles pair in the ITA Northeast Regional.
- In 2023, Penn State earned 12 wins, including four in Big Ten action.
- Chekhlystova picked up All-Big Ten honors, collecting 22 singles wins and 14 doubles wins, ranking as high as No. 42 in the ITA Singles Poll.
- Olivia Dorner earned 17 singles wins as a freshman, including 15 wins in dual matches.
- Chekhlystova was named College Sports Communicators Academic All-District.
- During the 2022 campaign, the Nittany Lions posted 11 wins and five wins in Big Ten conference play.
- Penn State made the ITA national rankings during the season, ranking as high as No. 61.
- Chekhlystova earned All-Big Ten honors, going 11-4 in singles action, all in the No. 1 bout, and a 4-2 mark in Big Ten play during the 2022 season.
- In her second year as head of the program in 2021, Anghelescu coached the Nittnay Lions to a 9-7 record in conference play during the spring season, the first winning record in conference action since 2015.
- McIntyre coached senior Gabby O’Gorman to a unanimous selection to All-Big Ten honors in 2021.
- The 2020 spring was shortened due to the COVID-19 Pandemic cancelling Big Ten play. Despite the pandemic, in her first year as head coach, McIntyre led the Nittany Lions to five wins in 10 matches, including victories over Iowa State, Marshall and VCU.
- As an assistant coach, McIntyre helped lead the Nittany Lions to 11 wins during the 2019 spring season, the team's most dual-match victories since 2015.
- The Nittany Lions reached a team ranking of No. 49, their first top-50 ranking since the 2016 season. Penn State also knocked off then-No. 48 VCU for its first win over a ranked opponent since 2015.
- Prior to matriculating to Penn State, McIntyre played and coached at two Atlantic Coast Conference institutions.
- McIntyre served as a volunteer assistant coach at North Carolina during the 2017-18 season. She aided the Tar Heels win the ITA National Indoor Championship, the 2018 ACC Tournament and earn the nation's No. 1 ranking for 10 consecutive weeks.
- North Carolina finished the 2017-18 season with five All-Americans, had five players take part in the NCAA Individual Championships and had a doubles squad advance to the NCAA semifinals.
- Prior to joining the Tar Heels' staff, McIntyre served as a certified Tennis Professional working with junior players of all levels at Life Time Fitness in Alpharetta, Georgia, in addition to serving as a 2018 USTA National Spring Team Championships Coach.
- She also worked with the USTA Southern Section High Performance Camp as a Selected Coach.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS AN ATHLETE
- McIntyre spent her collegiate playing days at Georgia and Georgia Tech.
- She achieved an ITA top 10 ranking in doubles at Georgia Tech, helping the Yellow Jackets to a consistent top 15 national ranking and round of 16 appearances at the ITA National Indoor Championships and the NCAA Championships.
- A native of John's Creek, Georgia, McIntyre reached a high ranking of No. 935 as a professional on the WTA Tour in singles action and No. 957 in WTA doubles.
- Her top win in juniors was a victory over 2017 U.S. Open Champion Sloane Stephens.
- McIntyre graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration from Georgia Tech in 2014.
